Bila kita perhatikan ukuran bangunan, bak tampung air, lubang ventilasi, dan pemberian tanah merah pada dasarnya adalah untuk menjaga kelembaban dan suhu agar sesuai dengan habitat seriti/walet. Banyak teori yang mengajarkan kepada kita tentang menghitung berapa luas bangunan, berapa luas bak tampung air, berapa banyak lubang ventilasi agar kelembaban dan suhu ruangan mendekati yang disukai seriti/walet. Semua teori itu adalah mendekati 'benar' karena telah mengalami penelitian dan berdasar pengalaman. Namun hal itu tidak sepenuhnya benar karena tidak mungkin kita dapat membuat ruangan yang mempunyai kelembaban dan suhu sesuai dengan yang disukai habitat seriti/walet tanpa kita mengukur berapa kelembaban dan suhu ruangan tersebut dan mengaturnya. Untuk mengukur kelembaban dan suhu kita dapat menggunakan thermohygrometer (sebatas mengukur saja), tapi akankah kita senantiasa mengukur dan mengaturnya secara manual (di dalam ruangan) dan setiap detik pula padahal seriti/walet butuh ketenangan dalam ruangan. Kalaupun bisa paling dengan jalan diambil jalan tengahnya misalnya pemberian pengembun dalam ruangan untuk membantu meningkatkan kelembaban dan suhu dengan cara dihidupkan saat-saat cuaca kering dan panas. Begitu pula walet. Sehingga walet memilih tempat yang memenuhi syarat :&lt;br /&gt;•Aman yaitu aman dari gangguan, terlindung dari terpaan angin, terik matahari, hujan      dan cahaya yang terang.&lt;br /&gt;•Nyaman yaitu tempat sesuai habitatnya. Tempat yang sesuai dengan habitat walet adalah bersuhu 26-29 C, berkelembaban 80-90 dan dekat dengan tempat ia mencari makan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sehingga walet memilih gua-gua alam dan bangunan tertentu sebagai tempat pengembangan populasinya. Semakin aman dan nyaman tempatnya maka semakin bertambah pula jumlah populasinya. &lt;br /&gt;Oleh sebab itu diperlukan suatu perlakuan khusus untuk memancing walet atau menjaga dan mengembangkan populasi walet pada bangunan yang sudah dimasuki walet. Perlakuan khusus itu pada dasarnya adalah membuat bangunan yang sesuai dengan habitat walet. Kelebihan lain: ia mempunyai kemampuan untuk menyimpan memori. 'Jadi pengecekan kelembapan tidak perlu dilakukan setiap hari,' ujar Philip. Pengecekan pun cukup praktis, hanya dengan menekan satu tombol, maka kelembapan maksimum dan minimum bisa diketahui. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Sarang kering &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Higrometer mutlak ada di tiap rumah walet. 'Kelembapan dalam rumah walet harus 80%-95%, karena itu diperlukan higrometer untuk mengukurnya,' ujar Hary. Bila kelembapan dalam ruangan tidak terukur, bisa berpengaruh terhadap kualitas sarang yang dihasilkan. Kelembapan di atas 95% menyebabkan sarang yang dihasilkan benyek, karena terlalu banyak air. 'Kelembapan terlalu tinggi juga menimbulkan jamur di kayu dan sarang burung,' ujar Ubaidillah Thohir, praktikus walet di Gresik, Jawa Timur.&lt;br /&gt;Kelembapan pun tidak boleh terlalu rendah. Bila hal itu terjadi, maka sarang yang dihasilkan tipis, kering, dan mudah pecah. Selain itu bulu walet pun lebih mudah rontok sehingga mengotori sarang. 'Yang lebih buruk lagi, walet bisa kabur bila kelembapan terlalu rendah,' tutur Ubaidillah. Hal sama disetujui oleh Hary. Menurut alumnus Oral Roberts University, di Tulsa, Oklahoma, Amerika Serikat itu, kondisi rumah walet harus sesuai dengan habitat alaminya di gua. 'Gua itu kan lembap dan gelap,' ujarnya.&lt;br /&gt;Menjaga kelembapan dapat dilakukan dengan 2 cara, pasif dan aktif. Cara pasif dengan membuat bak-bak penampung air. 'Ukurannya beragam, tergantung ukuran rumah,' ujar Philip. Selain bak, bisa juga dibuat parit kecil 20 cm sedalam 20 cm di pinggir dinding. Bila bangunan cukup kuat, buat kolam di atas atap. 'Biasanya bagian atap itu yang paling panas, karena itu perlu dibuat kolam,' ucap Hary. Bila bangunan tidak cukup kuat, letakkan ember-ember berisi air dalam ruangan.&lt;br /&gt;Menaikkan kelembapan dengan cara aktif dilakukan dengan menggunakan alat pengkabutan. Menurut Hary ada 2 tipe alat pengkabutan : yang berbentuk antena dan paralel. Penggunaannya diatur dengan timer. Bila kelembapan terlalu rendah, otomatis alat ini akan menyemprotkan air ke dinding ruangan. Setelah kelembapan optimal tercapai, ia berhenti bekerja. Yang harus diingat, tinggi semprotan harus diatur agar jangan sampai terkena kayu tempat walet bersarang. Bila hal itu terjadi, kayu bakal busuk.&lt;br /&gt;Namun, bila kelembapan sudah sesuai, maka cara-cara di atas tidak diperlukan. Yang paling penting, kelembapan harus selalu dicek. Dengan munculnya alat pengukur kelembapan yang lebih praktis maka pengecekan kelembapan tidak lagi sukar. Apalagi sekarang, Fofoo Dohona, praktikus walet di Tangerang, Banten tengah menciptakan alat pengukur kelembapan dengan menggunakan laser. Saat ini alat itu sedang diteliti oleh Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI). Bila alat itu sudah selesai, pengecekan kelembapan tidak lagi merepotkan. Misalnya bentuk utuh menyerupai mangkuk, warna sarang cerah, dan bersih dari kotoran binatang seperti kepinding. asar sarang sebagai bahan baku kosmetik dan kesehatan sudah dilirik. Beberapa pabrik kini memanfaatkan material sarang sebagai dasar produk kecantikan. Ia dipakai sebagai krim kulit, dibuat kapsul untuk penyegar badan hingga kapsul awet muda. Beberapa penelitian menyebutkan mengkonsumsi sarang walet meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sarang merah buatan dari Karawang itu memang sudah melanglang sampai ke Cina, Taiwan, Hongkong, dan Kanada. Mayoritas penyantapnya tetap warga Tionghoa setempat yang percaya khasiat sarang merah sebagai obat. 'Tak kurang dari 2 kuintal per bulan ekspor dari Karawang,' kata Ade Yamani, konsultan pembuat sarang merah.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sejatinya produksi sarang merah alami sangat sedikit. Hingga kini belum diketahui penyebab terbentuknya sarang merah asli. 'Kemungkinan walet memakan serangga tertentu,' ujar Ubaidillah Thohir, praktikus di Sedayu, Gresik, Jawa Timur. Karena produksi terbatas, harga sarang merah mencapai Rp20-juta/kg, sementara sarang putih Rp13-juta-Rp15-juta/kg. Sebab itu, banyak yang mencoba sarang merah buatan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Kotoran &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Menurut Abeng-sapaan akrab Ade-memerahkan sarang walet tidak sulit. 'Tidak perlu memakai bahan kimia,' katanya. Dalam waktu 1-7 hari, sarang putih dapat disulap menjadi sarang merah. Yang pertama kali disiapkan adalah bak semen untuk memendam sarang. Bak berukuran minimal 1 m x 3 m x 1 m. Sebidang ruang kosong dengan tinggi 20 cm dibuat di dasar bak itu. Tujuannya untuk tempat menampung air bekas merendam kotoran.&lt;br /&gt;Di bagian luar ruangan kosong, dipasang kran pembuangan air. Di atas ruangan kosong, diletakkan besi behel yang ditutupi kawat kassa. Setelah siap, bak dapat diisi kotoran walet setinggi 50-60 cm. Bagian atas bak ditutup plat besi dengan ketebalan 0,2 mm. Tujuannya agar panas dalam bak tidak mengalir ke luar sehingga kelembapannya terjaga.&lt;br /&gt;Feses Collocalia fuciphaga yang digunakan matang dan bersih dari kotoran daun kering, ranting, plastik, atau sampah lainnya. Taburkan kotoran walet setinggi kurang lebih 5-10 cm dari dasar behel. Sebagai gambaran bak berukuran 1 m x 3 m x 1 m bisa diisi 5 kuintal. Agar kotoran tercampur homogen, rendam dalam air. Setelah itu tambahkan soda. 'Untuk mempercepat pematangan kotoran,' kata Abeng. Untuk 5 kuintal kotoran butuh 50 g soda yang dilarutkan dalam 10 l air itu.&lt;br /&gt;Larutan didiamkan semalam. Air rendaman lantas dikeluarkan melalui kran. Kotoran lalu diangkat dan dijemur. Penjemuran merupakan tahap penting karena memakan waktu lama, hingga kotoran berkadar air 5-10%. Kotoran yang kering tampak kemerahan dan berbau seperti tepung. Saat musim kemarau, penjemuran dapat berlangsung sebulan; musim penghujan mencapai 3-4 bulan. Selama penjemuran kotoran perlu dibolak-balik agar semua bagian merata keringnya. Selanjutnya kotoran matang itu dapat dimasukkan ke dalam bak&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;Dipendam&lt;/span&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Sarang putih yang akan dimerahkan ditaruh dalam wadah plastik berukuran 40 cm x 60 cm. Wadah dilapisi kain kassa agar kotoran tidak masuk. Satu wadah plastik berisi 40-50 yen ou-sebutan sarang walet di Cina. Setelah wadah disusun rapi di atas kotoran, bak ditutup rapat. Biarkan selama 1 malam, sarang putih akan jadi jingga atau kemerahan. Jika ingin lebih merah pemendaman dapat dilanjutkan.&lt;br /&gt;Menurut Abeng ada 3 warna sarang walet merah yang dihasilkan: merah sunkis alias golden nest, merah cerah, dan merah solid. Untuk memperoleh golden nest sarang cukup dipendam selama 1-2 hari dalam kotoran. 'Warna ini sangat diminati di Makau,' tambah penyedia sarana budidaya walet itu. Harga sarang walet sunkis mencapai Rp20-juta/kg. Sarang merah cerah perlu 3-5 hari pemendaman. Harga sarang ini Rp17-juta-Rp18-juta/kg. Sementara sarang merah solid butuh waktu paling lama, sekitar 7 hari. 'Kanada paling banyak minta warna merah solid,' kata pria kelahiran 36 tahun silam itu. Harga sarang merah solid sekitar Rp15-juta-Rp17-juta/kg saat ini.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;merah alami&lt;/span&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Meskipun sarang merah buatan berharga tinggi, tapi tidak semua praktikus walet setuju dengan cara itu. 'Yang dicari sebetulnya sarang walet merah alami, bukan buatan,' kata Harry K Nugroho, praktikus di Kelapagading, Jakarta Utara. Menurut Harry, memendam sarang putih dalam kotoran walet memang dapat menyebabkan sarang berubah warna: merah. 'Itu karena kerja amonia,' ujar pemilik Eka Walet Center itu. &lt;br /&gt;Lagi katanya perubahan warna dari putih menjadi merah belum tentu menambah khasiat. 'Apalagi bird nest itu akan dikonsumsi manusia, jadi rasanya tidak etis jika membuatnya memakai kotoran,' katanya. This nest is usually found in caves near shoreline cliffs or under eaves of house and is hand-collected. Hairs and filth are then removed from the nest before manufacturing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Swiftlet bird (scientifically named Collocalia, known as Walet in Indonesia) belongs to the Apodidae family, which is not the same as the common Swallow bird. Swiftlet birds live in flocks along tropical seaside and consume wild insects. From the appearance, Swiftlet differs from the so called "House Swallow" size wise. The average body length of a Swiftlet is 9 centimeters, about half the size of a Swallow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Swiftlet has a shorter and rectangular-sharped tail while Swallow has a longer and forked tail.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The average life span of a Swiftlet is about 15 to 18 years.
